Improvements to the fire control system and brighter lights in the cafe are among a series of recent upgrades at Otago Museum.
A recent museum report notes that the museum's fire protection system had a "major upgrade" late last year, with a new fire protection panel installed, giving more control across all parts of the building.
The old panel had reached capacity, and appropriate replacement parts had become difficult to source.
The museum atrium's walls and columns had been repainted to "keep them looking fresh", with work done outside opening hours to avoid disruption to visitors.
New light fittings at the museum cafe used 30% less energy but emitted double the amount of light, making the space "remarkably brighter and more inviting", the report by museum chief executive Shimrath Paul noted.
