The VistaJet Bombardier Global 7500 private jet arrived in the city about 7am yesterday from Los Angeles, off the back of flights from destinations including Amsterdam, Zurich and Paris all within the past week.
This type of jet costs about $75m to $81m.
VistaJet said its private charter flights started from $11,000 per hour.
Notable owners and users included Kylie Jenner, Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Dunedin Airport chief executive Daniel De Bono said he did not know who was aboard the aircraft — and could not say even if he did.
Bookings for such aircraft were often made by the operator themselves and the airport was given little detail about who was on board, he said.
Mainland Air chief executive Phil Kean also did not know who was aboard the aircraft, but said it was among a small number of other corporate jets which had landed at the airport lately.
The XO global private aviation network, a private jet chartering network, lists two upcoming ‘‘empty leg’’ flights from Dunedin to Sydney, on Thursday and Friday.
Each would cost $28,330.
The Bombardier Global 7500 is the private aviation company’s flagship aircraft, offering the longest non-stop flight time in its fleet of 17 hours.
It can accommodate up to 14 passengers seated or eight sleeping.
The same jet spotted in Dunedin has also been photographed at airports in Taiwan, Austria, Frankfurt and Malaysia.
It also flew to and from Dusseldorf, Edinburgh and Chambery this month.
