A yellow centre-line and arrows encouraging pedestrians to keep left on the St David St footbridge near the University of Otago, aim to improve pedestrian traffic flow and congestion across the bridge.

A University of Otago spokeswoman said the arrows were part of a temporary intervention, put in place by a group of third year psychology students analysing behaviour in everyday life.

"As part of their psychology paper, the students have to work in groups to identify a local community issue and implement an intervention to try and improve people’s behaviour to address the issue.

"The arrows will only be there temporarily while the study is being carried out this month.’’

The markings have been popular fodder for social media users.

One person joked: "This is only a temporary measure while the safety barrier and clip-in cable are being fabricated. Has the bin with helmets and  harnesses been installed yet? It’s hard to see from the picture.’’

Another questioned whether it was a reflection of the level of common sense in modern day students.
