Cam McCracken's will take up the directorship of DPAG in October.
Dr Sue Bidrose, DCC general manager city strategy and development, said Mr McCracken's experience in management and strategic planning of cultural institutions would consolidate the work done by previous director Elizabeth Caldwell.
Ms Caldwell resigned in April after three years as the director of DPAG, after successfully gaining the directorship of City Gallery Wellington.
"Cam stood out in a field of applicants who were of an extremely high standard. He brings a wealth of experience in this sector and has practical experience in all areas of museum management and the Gallery will benefit greatly from his knowledge," Dr Bidrose said.
