Nothing wasted

Junior pupils from Mornington School, in Dunedin, show off their costumes, made from waste, in the ''Wearable Wonders'' show yesterday.

More than 100 pupils, aged between 5 and 7, strutted their stuff on the catwalk as they showed off the handmade masterpieces they had created out of discarded material from home and recycling from various local businesses.

The catwalk had it all as proud friends and family watched a display which included pirates, princesses, birds and fire engines. They encouraged and cheered the children as they took the stage, and one crowd member called the show ''amazing''.

Yesterday was the grand finale to a ''what makes trash flash'' classroom unit that focused on the environment and the importance of recycling.

Deputy principal Carmel Jolly said the pupils had been very excited and were very proud of their costumes, which were a ''work of love''.

The school also collected canned food at the event.
