NZ’s best young singers raise the roof

Finalists in the 2016 Big Sing secondary schools choral festival combine under musical director Andrew Withington during a rehearsal for the Big Sing Gala Concert on Saturday night in  the Dunedin Town Hall.

Performances by more than 900 pupils from the country’s top 24 choirs were live-streamed  around the world on the internet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The event culminated in Saturday night’s gala concert  and an awards ceremony, in which Westlake Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools Choralation  choir won the overall award.

Results of the 2016 Big Sing Finale were.— Gold awards: Burnside High School (Bel Canto); Burnside High School (Senior Chorale); Diocesan School for Girls (St Cecilia Singers); Kristin School (Euphony); Saint Kentigern College (Kentoris); Westlake Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools (Choralation); Westlake Boys’ High School (Voicemale). Silver Awards: Chilton Saint James School (Seraphim); Craighead Diocesan (Chorale); Dilworth School (Fortissimo); Epsom Girls’ Grammar School (Paradisum); Nelson College for Girls (Stella Nova); One Tree Hill College (Chorale); Rangitoto College (The Fundamentals); St Cuthbert’s College (Saints Alive); Tawa College (Blue Notes); Wellington Girls’ College (Teal Voices); Westlake Girls’ High School (Cantare). Bronze Awards: Christ’s College (Schola Cantorum); Macleans College (Chorale); Rangi Ruru Girls’ School (Resolutions); Saint Kentigern College (Menasing); St Hilda’s Collegiate (Madrigal Choir); Woodford House (Chapel Choir). Auahi Kore Award: Kristin School (Euphony). Hutt City Trophy: Kristin School (Euphony). TourTime Award: Westlake Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools (Choralation). SOUNZ-NZCF Composition Competition winner: Megan Younger, Nelson College for Girls. Youth Ambassadors Award: Dilworth School. Platinum Award: Westlake Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools (Choralation).
