One board for, one neutral on, pokie proposal

Poker machines were a hot topic at two community board meetings last week.

At a Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board meeting on Wednesday, members talked about the Dunedin City Council's review of its gambling and TAB venue policy.

The proposed policy is to extend the sinking lid for poker machines, in place in South Dunedin now, to the entire Dunedin district.

If accepted, when a venue with poker machines closed, the licence for those machines would not be made available to another venue.

Board member Martin Dillon said the board area had six venues with poker machines.

He had read the policy and the proposal was ''logical''.

Board chairwoman Sarah Nitis said the board would submit in support of the proposed change to the policy.

At a Saddle Hill Community Board meeting at Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club on Thursday, the board discussed the review.

Board chairman Scott Weatherall said many community organisations relied on funding generated from the use of poker machines.

''If we continue to minimise the number of gaming machines in the communities, then community groups will suffer.''

Money from the machines had helped build the club, he said.

As gambling posed ethical issues, the board decided against making a submission but encouraged residents in its area to make submissions before feedback closed at 5pm on December 6.
