One more Channel attempt for former Dunedin man

Dunedin man Dr Stanley Paris (70) will try one last time to become the oldest person to swim the English Channel in September.

The physiotherapist will be 71 by then and if he succeeds will be almost a year older than the present record holder.

Dr Paris, who lives in Florida, failed in his last attempt last month, when he was just over halfway across the Channel, afflicted by painful cramps and intense nausea.

In an email from Spain, where he is resting on board his yacht before going back into training, he said "not to try again is just not me".

He said he was no stranger to failure, having failed to complete the swim twice before succeeding when he was 49.

"I know the odds remain against a success due principally to age, but that just provides one additional reason for me to succeed."

He noted the water temperature was rising.

He found the coldness of the water particularly difficult to overcome.

In his training before the attempt on September 4, he will also experiment with foods that he can ingest and digest while swimming.
