Oranga Tamariki spending $50k on Dunedin facility

Oranga Tamariki is spending more than $50,000 on maintenance at a Dunedin youth facility.

Work is being carried out at the organisation’s Will St home, which can cater for four youths.

Regional manager youth justice South Island and Wellington Ben Hannifin said regular maintenance work was being carried out to ensure the home was suitable for the children and young people who resided there.

The work included replacing carpet throughout the home, dividing a space to create additional storage and doing routine maintenance of whiteware and fire and alarm systems.

The project would cost $56,400, he said.

"The home is currently open for staff recruitment and training. There are no children and young people currently residing at the property."

Admissions to the home would resume soon, he said.

Nearby residents were recently sent an online survey regarding community perceptions of impacts of social services on local communities.

The survey was being conducted among a number of communities around the country, not just in Dunedin, Mr Hannifin said.
