A small Otago Regional Council working party has been set up to liaise with the Dunedin City Council over a suggestion it hand over control of the city's bus system.

The city's passenger transport system is run by the Otago Regional Council.

Its chairman, Stephen Cairns, suggested last month it would be a better fit for the city council to run it, even though there were some major barriers to doing so.

At yesterday's policy and resource planning committee, Mr Cairns suggested the concept needed to move forward.

It was decided to set up a working party involving Mr Cairns, chief executive Graeme Martin and Cr Michael Deaker to begin investigating the possibility of transferring the governance of the public transport system to the city council.

This working party would be able to meet the city council and work out terms of reference and a way forward for the issue, he said.
