Otago Boys' High School deputy rector Andrew Turner has been appointed principal of Gisborne Boys' High School.

The official announcement was made during the North Island school's prizegiving last night.

Gisborne Boys' won the Prime Minister's Supreme Award in 2015 for excellence in teaching and learning.

Mr Turner will move north with wife Michelle (who works in the OBHS canteen) and their four children. He is expected to start in January next year.

Mr Turner was appointed deputy rector at Otago Boys' in 2015.

OBHS rector Richard Hall said during Mr Turner's short time at the school he had ''elevated'' many of its practices and systems.

''But it is the relationships he forged with our staff, our pupils and our community that have made the most significant impression.

''I think he brings an excellent understanding and knowledge of boys' education and he will be a fine leader of men.

''Gisborne Boys' High School have got someone who will be an outstanding leader for years to come.''
