University chaplain the Rev Greg Hughson and a long-serving Otago University Students Association staff member Anna McMartin have been named as association life members at a recent ceremony in their honour.

OUSA president Simon Wilson said Mr Hughson was a popular chaplain who had supported students since beginning his duties in February 2000.

Mr Wilson highlighted his role in supporting friends and families of bereaved students and his ongoing work toward a Muslim prayer space on campus.

Ms McMartin, who now works for the Ministry of Education, in Wellington, began her work for the association by assisting a former social activities manager.

She then became a humanities division representative on the association executive in 2001.

After serving as Otago Polytechnic Students Association president for a year, she returned to OUSA to manage its student support centre, there developing the association's pastoral role, he said.

Mr Wilson has also been named as a life member.

OUSA presidents and up to two other people can gain that honour each year, under the OUSA constitution.
