Pacific Blue gets credit for rise in outbound passengers

A record number of passengers has flown from Dunedin International Airport in the past year, and chief executive John McCall is attributing the increase to Pacific Blue entering the domestic market.

A record 780,000 domestic and international passengers departed the airport in the year ending June 30, up from 709,000 the previous year.

If Air New Zealand had not reduced its transtasman services earlier this year, passenger numbers might have topped 800,000, he said.

On July 1 last year, Pacific Blue launched its seven-day-a-week Dunedin to Christchurch service, and the competition in the domestic market had resulted in cheaper fares.

Mr McCall said passenger numbers from Dunedin could increase when the budget carrier begins its three times a week Dunedin to Brisbane service in September.

Pacific Blue spokesman Phil Boeyen said the airline was pleased with its entry into the Dunedin market, and was set to replace its Dunedin-Christchurch-Auckland service with a direct daily service between Auckland and Dunedin from next month.

Ticket sales for its transtasman services had been good, and the airline would consider offering other services if demand warranted it.
