Two teenagers will appear in court today after a series of nuisance fires in Dunedin's north end yesterday.

Police officers swarmed the streets surrounding Woodhaugh Gardens yesterday afternoon after reports of three bin fires in an hour.

A police spokeswoman said two males, an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old, were located by police and would appear in the Dunedin Youth Court today facing charges in relation to all three fires.

Two youths could be seen being spoken to by officers on George St - about a block from the gardens - just after 4pm yesterday.

One of the two males had a hood over his head.

The pair were led away in a police patrol car.

Station officer Ant O'Neill, of Willowbank, said firefighters had extinguished the three fires - two in rubbish bins and one in a sanitary disposal bin.

The first fire was lit in a rubbish bin in Bank St about 3pm.

The two other fires were lit in Woodhaugh Gardens - one in a play area and the other in a women's toilets.

Firefighters used extinguishers to put out all three, he said.

Burnt cardboard was strewn around Woodhaugh Gardens yesterday afternoon.

The gardens had been a target of nuisance fires earlier this year with a series of grass fires lit in the area in February.

No-one was caught in relation to those.
