A 44-year-old man and a female student have been taken to hospital following a collision between a van and truck and trailer unit on State Highway 1 north of Dunedin.
The incident occurred about 10.30am near Double Hill Rd, Waitati, when a van being driven by the man was T-boned by the truck and trailer travelling north.
Police believe the van driver started a U-turn across the highway, having failed to see the truck behind.
He had just picked up two hitch-hiking Dunedin students.
A female student, in the front passenger seat, received moderate injuries along with the van driver, but a male student in the rear of the van was uninjured.
The truck driver also escaped injury.
SH1 traffic was restricted to one lane only while emergency services attended.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
