Emergency services staff and pedestrians assist a 78-year-old woman pedestrian who was hit by a 4WD in central Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

A witness at the scene said she heard a ''loud bump, and then screaming'', near the School of Dentistry in Great King St, about 3.05pm.

A St John spokesman said the patient suffered moderate injuries, including possible arm and head injuries.

He rejected any suggestion of a delay in paramedics attending the incident, which occurred several hundred metres from Dunedin Hospital.

Times supplied by St John showed a paramedic in a response vehicle was assigned to the incident at 3.10pm and on its way six minutes later, before arriving at the scene at 3.26pm.

An ambulance was at the scene by 3.31pm, and the woman was transported to hospital.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said police were at the scene within several minutes of being called.

Inquiries into the cause of the crash were continuing, he said.
