Pedestrian still in serious condition

Southern District Command Centre Deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Matt Scoles said the elderly woman hit by a ute in Central Dunedin on Sunday was in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Dunedin Hospital.

The accident happened about 1pm in St Andrew St, between George and Filleul Sts.

The 78-year-old woman suffered ''life-threatening'' head injuries after being struck by the Ford ute when she was crossing the road ''from north to south'', Snr Sgt Scoles said.

Inquiries were ongoing, but it was believed the driver of the ute was reversing and backed into the woman.

In a stroke of ''very good fortune'' the first person on the scene was an off-duty St John staff member.

''He was with her immediately after she was struck. So, obviously, the medical care she received was top-end right from the outset.''

The street was cordoned off, from George St to Filleul St, while a serious crash unit investigator marked the scene and police spoke to witnesses and the ute driver. It was too early to determine who was at fault.

A witness told the Otago Daily Times the woman appeared to be unconscious when she was loaded into a St John ambulance.
