South Dunedin pensioners should not have to travel into the central city to get a Gold Card discount, a resident says.

Andersons Bay resident Rob Donaldson said it was unfair card holders got a 5% discount on Tuesdays at Countdown Central, but not at Countdown Andersons Bay and Dunedin South.

He said there were a lot of elderly people in other areas of the city who would love to get the discount.

"It’s a shame you’ve got a lot of elderly people out here and down the road.

"It would be good if they could do something here with the Gold Card on Tuesdays."

He said making the trip out to Countdown Central in Cumberland St was too expensive.

"I’m over in Andy Bay and it’s 10km to go into town and come back and petrol is not cheap."

Mr Donaldson said he had been complaining to the store manager in Dunedin South for about two years and said the store had received a lot of inquiries about the discount from other customers as well.

However, nothing had changed.

He said a 5% discount would be better than receiving nothing.

A Woolworths New Zealand spokesman said the discount day was offered in about one-third of its stores.

There was no national policy for the day and was run on a store-by-store basis depending on different factors including local demographics, demand and customer feedback.

He said it was looking to extend the programme further around the country.
