Arthur St School pupils Kaedyn Trow (9, left) and Nikau McNeilly (10) plant a coprosma in Woodhaugh Gardens yesterday  morning during the Project Gold tree-planting event.

About 100 people, both young and old, planted about 300 native plants and trees during the event, which is part of the Dunedin Town Belt Education Initiative.

Town Belt Kaitiaki education co-ordinator Claudia Babirat said the aim of the project was to re-introduce more native fauna back into the city’s town belt.

"We’re working with nine different schools, all mostly within walking distance of the town belt, [talking] about how we can better manage and promote the area."

The  project was supported by the Dunedin Amenities Society and was also a celebration of Arbor Day, Mr Babirat said.
