Dunedin School of Art sculpture student Lily-Jean Redgrave is ready and waiting to show off her end-of-year project at an exhibition of second-year students' sculpture at the Underground Market in George St, Dunedin.

Ms Redgrave (19), who is from Auckland, spent about 10 weeks crocheting the covers for the furniture she piled up as a tribute to domestic culture in the 1970s.

''It was tiring, boring and straining work, like the lives a lot of women had to lead in the day.''

She taught herself to crochet last summer, but admitted she did not think she would be picking up a crochet hook this summer.

However, she did worry the habit of crocheting in front of television had become so ingrained she would not be able to give it up.

''I got very sore hands. I don't want to have to touch wool or a needle.''

The exhibition, which opened last night, was her first as she had come straight from high school to art school.

''I now know what stress and tiredness really is.''

Ten second-year sculpture students are exhibiting their work, much of which was a tribute to artists' work from the 1960s onwards.

The exhibition is open daily between 11am and 2pm until Friday.
