Police seek information after fourth Dunedin arson

Police are calling for any suspicious behaviour in South Dunedin to be reported immediately following a fourth late night arson.

Police spotted a house on fire near the intersection of Moreau and Richardson Sts on Saturday night.

"Flames from a wheelie bin set on fire on the eastern side of a house on Richardson St had spread to the wooden weatherboards of the property and the side of the house was well ablaze,'' Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said.

"Officers alerted the occupants and got them safely out of the building before controlling the fire with extinguishers from their patrol car and the house.

"Fire were notified by police and attended to fully put out the blaze.''

The officers who spotted the blaze were patrolling the area about 11.40pm on Saturday following three earlier suspicious fires in the area.

Two cars, in Jackson St and Bird St, were torched the week before the house fire and a commercial bus was also set alight in the same week outside the Ocean Beach Hotel, in Prince Albert Rd.

All fires were deemed suspicious and Dunedin CIB was investigating, he said.

"Police will continue to patrol the area but are asking for anyone with any information to contact us,'' Det Sgt Henderson said.

"Anyone with any information about any of these incidents is asked to contact Dunedin Police.''

Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour should report it immediately via 111.
