If you are used to driving at 110kmh on the open road, be warned: this weekend you will not get away with it.
From 4pm today until 6am on Tuesday, the tolerance of 110kmh before a ticket is issued will not apply and anyone caught travelling at more than 104kmh will be given a speeding ticket.
The policy will be applied nationwide for the first time, for Queen's Birthday weekend.
Extra police will also be out in force from today, targeting anyone breaking the road rules.
Southern police district road policing manager Inspector Andrew Burns made no apologies for the policy to ticket those driving at more than 104kmh.
"The most effective tool we have to keep you and your family alive is enforcement of road rules... Road safety is everyone's responsibility."
"Don't drink and drive, don't exceed the speed limit, wear your seatbelt, remain within your lane and drive to the conditions. These simple rules will ensure the safety of everyone using the roads."
He said local police wanted the southern district roads to be the safest in the country, and to achieve that, extra officers were being put in road policing for the weekend, especially around Central Otago, where traffic was expected to be heavier with the annual Brass Monkey Rally being held in Oturehua.
National road policing manager Superintendent Paula Rose said police would accept no excuses.
