Burglars 'clearly active' in North Dunedin

Police are stressing the importance of locking homes and vehicles after a spate of burglaries in Dunedin's student precinct at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said clothing and a small safe were stolen from a property on Hyde St between 11pm Saturday and 1am Sunday.

It was disappointing the property was left unlocked and police wanted to stress the importance of residents locking their homes, he said.

Also at the weekend a bike was stolen from an address on Albany St and a vehicle was broken into on Anzac Ave from which a bluetooth speaker was stolen.

There was "clearly someone active" in the North Dunedin area, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.

"So we would be pressing for residents to make sure that they secure their premises, their property and their vehicles, and report anything suspicious to police."
