A constable in the armed offenders squad holds police puppy Vann at a squad training day in Dunedin.

The 8-week-old puppy was being fostered in Dunedin by the constable, who had career aspirations of being a dog handler, a police spokeswoman said.

The constable, who did not want to be named, would foster the dog for about eight months and take Vann to police training days.

The German shepherd was one of two puppies the New Zealand police dog breeding programme gave the Dunedin dog section in the past week, she said.

The other puppy, named Uni, was the same age as Vann and was being fostered by another constable in Dunedin.

Both puppies will train under the guidance of the area puppy development officer, Const Regan Mauheni.
