Otago Polytechnic is supporting Dunedin businessman Ian Taylor's bid to vary the terms of an economic development grant so he can use the money to establish a world-class sports analysis centre based at the Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Mr Taylor's company, Animation Research Ltd, obtained a grant through the Dunedin City Council for a specific project but did not use it all.

Mr Taylor told the polytechnic council last month he wanted to vary the terms of the grant to enable him to use the remainder of the money for the sports analysis project.

He hopes to harness the technological, intellectual and practical skills of local businesses and educational institutions as partners.

The polytechnic gave its support in principle last month but said it needed more details about how the partnership would work and what its financial contribution might be.

Contacted this week, polytechnic marketing, communications and customer relations general manager Mike Waddell said the polytechnic had decided to contribute up to $15,000, providing Mr Taylor was able to successfully vary his grant with the council.

Polytechnic chief executive Phil Ker had written a letter of support to accompany Mr Taylor's approach to the council, Mr Waddell said.
