The NZ Post Shop Gardens is scheduled to close on November 21, as the lease on the building is expiring.
Linda Munro has lived in North East Valley since the 1980s and always used the post office for her mailing and some shopping needs.
"It's just shocking and anybody that knows [about it] has been shocked."
Ms Munro found out about the closure from a message that had been posted on the window of the store.
"Myself and my friends knew and we're kind of horrified because the thing is, it's
supposed to service a huge area."
The residents the post office serviced included those in Opoho, Pine Hill, North East Valley and some of North Dunedin.
Its location was convenient for her and many others, as it was inside New World Gardens, she said.
People would now have to travel to the NZ Post Shop Dunedin South or the University Book Shop, she said.
That was no issue for her as she could drive there herself, but it made it inaccessible for other North East Valley residents, she said.
"A lot of elderly people don't drive.
"It's going to be quite devastating I think for a lot of people," she said.
She believed the closure was part of "making everything online" and had even considered starting a petition to keep it open, she said.
A letter to a customer seen bythe Otago Daily Times confirmed the PO boxes outside the store were being shut down, along with the store’s closure.
An NZ Post spokesperson said they were not saying goodbye to North East Valley customers.
"We will soon be upgrading and adding Billpay services to our existing North Dunedin store in the uni bookshop."
This would be done next year, they said.
