A pride parade along George St could be held as early as next year, organisers of the Dunedin Pride Festival say.

Dunedin Pride Inc contact officer Tanya Findlater said there was no parade on the festival programme for this year, but if it was something the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA) community wanted in the future, it was something that could be established, as early as next year.

"It's certainly something we'd look at.

"It would be a great way to display the community to Dunedin.

''All of the events we run aim to showcase the talent of our community, as well as strengthen and support our community.''

This year's festival would be held on April 4-8 and a full programme of events would be released next month.

But one event already being worked on was a community picnic, she said.

"We definitely want to have a community picnic on the Sunday.

"It'll be an opportunity for everybody to get together and have a good time, hopefully in the sun.

"We'll also be having a poetry evening and a drag storytelling event in the Dunedin Public Library.''

She said the number of events at this year's festival had been scaled down because the organising committee was small and time was of the essence.

Organisers wanted to do fewer things, but focus on doing them well.

"What we're doing this year is we're collaborating more with community groups.

"So events will be run in partnership so that it's not just the management committee doing everything.''
