A track at Taiaroa Head which runs along sea cliffs has become a "major safety issue" and a proposal from Dunedin City Council staff to upgrade the Otago Peninsula track has been welcomed.

Council parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson said the proposal had yet to be costed or approved by the council, but initial plans included several viewing platforms and a boardwalk.

Ground erosion was a problem on the track and some fence repairs had to be undertaken when the footings became exposed.

The proposed work would improve safety and the viewing platforms would give people a better view over the cliff edge, without having to lean out over the fence.

Royal Albatross Centre manager Sam Inder said while about one third of people who visited Taiaroa Head took a paid tour, he estimated at least 90% of visitors walked along the track to view the sea cliffs.

The track was so worn it was dangerous and children often climbed up the fence because they could not see over it, he said.

Under the proposal most of the track would be gravelled with a wooden edging and three viewing platforms would be constructed with some wooden boardwalk.
