Dunedin playwright and director Richard Huber will have a reading of his play 'Glorious' presented at the Write Out Loud event at the Fortune Theatre studio on Sunday.
New Dunedin plays will appear on the professional stage for the first time this Sunday, in the Playmarket ‘‘Write Out Loud'' event at the Fortune Theatre studio.

At noon, actors will present a reading of Powdered Milk by Dunedin playwright Thalia Henry and this will be followed at 1.30pm by a reading of Glorious by Dunedin playwright and director Richard Huber.

These will be public readings of the plays, with entry costing $5 at the door.

This is the third year the Write Out Loud event has been held in order to present work by local writers. In the past, plays presented at the event have gone on to appear at professional theatres throughout New Zealand.

‘‘It's an integral part of their success as a playwright,'' Playmarket script developer Janie Walker said. Play readings were becoming more popular with the public, both here and internationally, Ms Walker said.

‘‘There's something very exciting about being witness to creative work that's still forming,'' Ms Walker said. Write Out Loud is also a chance for the industry to network.

‘‘We are proud of our local writers and would love to see more opportunities for the local community to view their work,'' Clare Adams, of Stage South, said.

In his play Glorious, Richard Huber explores how hard it is to love someone. ‘‘Having Glorious read off the page is a great chance to test the play on an audience,'' Huber said.

‘‘And a chance to see the characters in the flesh and see if the ideas work.''

A southern winner in Playmarket's New Zealand Young Playwrights Competition last year, Thalia Henry wrote Powdered Milk while she was living in Korea. While there, she reminisced about New Zealand's scenery in comparison to the Korean apartments that surrounded her.

‘‘Write Out Loud is a wonderful opportunity for me,'' Henry said.
