A group of Dunedin secondary school pupils plans to take its concerns about the city's plastic bag use to business people and the Dunedin City Council, following a forum at the weekend.

The Dunedin secondary pupils' climate forum, held at John McGlashan College, heard from speakers including Chalmers Community Board member Nicola Bould, who is campaigning against plastic bags in Port Chalmers, Mayor Peter Chin and University of Otago physicist Associate Prof Bob Lloyd.

Co-organiser Paul Young said about 20 pupils attended from schools around Dunedin.

The forum began last year as a platform for the younger generation to speak about environmental challenges, and the issue of plastic bags was chosen as a focus because it could be reasonably tackled by young people.

The pupils had a "brainstorming" session after hearing from the speakers, and came up with an action plan and a goal of Dunedin leading the way in lowering plastic bag use.

They would gather signatures of support at schools, and present their ideas to city councillors and business people, Mr Young said.
