"Popularity comes and goes, but you've always got your music."

Those were the words of wisdom offered by Opshop singer Jason Kerrison to pupils at Fairfield School yesterday.

The band visited the school after Becs Hill, mother of Fairfield Rock Band guitarist Javan Brown, asked Opshop to visit before its concert at the Regent Theatre last night.

"I followed some leads and kept making phone calls until I tracked them down. They were only too happy to oblige."

In a surreal moment, Opshop band members listened to the Fairfield Rock Band play Opshop songs, to which Kerrison said, "You guys were really wicked."

Kerrison said if the children continued to practice and enjoy performing, they may find fame too.

Many pupils were surprised to learn the band's members made their start in school bands and first met while competing against each other during the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rockquest competition.

School rock band member Sam Petrie (12) said watching his idols strut their stuff in the flesh was inspiring.

"I thought they were awesome. I learnt heaps about the chords and the picking they use, just by watching.

"I haven't got their CD but I'm going to get it now."

Rock band teacher Anthony Breese was delighted with the visit.

Already this year, Kiwi band Atlas had visited the school and he believed the visits were instrumental in the pupils' development.
