So to see five awarded in one night in Mosgiel was like hen’s teeth, Mosgiel Scouts group leader Michelle Ryan said.
Mosgiel scouts Olivia Druce (18), twins Ben and Jocelyn Ryan (18), Marcus Palenski (17) and Michaela Sharp (19) have achieved the top scouting award and will receive it from the Governor-General in an official ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall on September 30.
Mrs Ryan said the award marked the pinnacle of scouting effort and achievement.
"They have to do a lot of work over a three-year period to get it — like outdoor skills, tramping, community service and leadership."
Mrs Ryan was delighted with the club members’ success because it was quite rare for the award to be seen on the Taieri.
"We had one last year and one a couple of years prior to that.‘‘It’s fantastic to see five in one year. These guys have worked really hard for it."
She said the success was twofold.
Not only did it reward the scouts’ hard work, it also made their community a better place to live.
"It’s great to see.
"These awards bring a lot of character, leadership skills, life skills and service to the community. It turns them into really good adults."
The five celebrated with friends and family at a gathering in Mosgiel last night.
