Rally to oppose stadium project planned

Dunedin Ratepayers and Householders Association chairman Syd Adie has called for city ratepayers who oppose the Awatea St stadium project to join in a rally at Otago Regional Council next Wednesday, June 11.

Mr Adie is to speak in the public forum of the ORC's finance and corporate committee meeting, which will begin at 1.30pm at the council's Stafford St headquarters.

Although he had not seen the papers for the meeting, Mr Adie felt it might be the time when the ORC moved on its decision on the $37.5 million it had been asked to contribute to the Awatea St stadium project.

Contacted by The Star, Mr Cairns said Mr Adie and one other person had been given permission to speak in the committee meeting's public forum. The public forum could only be 30 minutes long, so there would not be much time for others to speak, but people were welcome to attend, he said.

The meeting would definitely consider the proposal that the ORC would contribute $37.5 million to the stadium, but Mr Cairns could not say whether the final ‘‘yes or no'' decision would be made.

‘‘We won't know until the day, but we will be trying to deal with it at that meeting,'' Mr Cairns said.
Any committee decision must be referred to the full Otago Regional Council meeting for ratification. The next full council meeting would be held on June 25, he said.
