Decked out in Santa suits, the participants would have been feeling the heat as they navigated the 2.5km John Wilson Ocean Dr course in temperatures of about 25degC.
Organiser Andy Redfearn said the annual event was a ''fantastic'' way of raising money for KidsCan, which supports disadvantaged children.
The Dunedin runners were among about 5000 who took part in santa runs around the country - including in Wanaka and Invercargill.
After the event was over, a few competitors cooled off with a dip in the St Kilda surf - Santa suits and all.
