Motorists marked the reopening of scenic John Wilson Ocean Dr in Dunedin to vehicles yesterday with a cruise to Lawyers Head and a stroll, a moment of quiet reflection or a sandwich.

The Otago Daily Times counted about 25 vehicles parked along the previously closed section of the coastal route to Lawyers Head during a visit about 1.30pm yesterday.

That number grew as a steady stream of motorists continued to cruise up the road for a look, or to park and enjoy lunch or a quiet walk around the scenic lookout at Lawyers Head.

Those spoken to said they were happy to see vehicle access to Lawyers Head restored.

"It's awesome," Clint Sorenson (25), of Dunedin, said when approached.

He had driven to the lookout to take his dog for a quick walk while enjoying the views.

He said reopening the road provided more places for people to "park up".

He didn't agree with the council's decision to close the road, but said a security fence to protect people in the area "wouldn't be that bad".

Daniel Woodhouse (22) and Katie Phillips (21), both of Dunedin, were visiting the area for the first time yesterday.

Mr Woodhouse said of the section of road overlooking the sea: "It's a nice place - brilliant views."

Two dog-owners out walking a dog would not be named, but said they too were "delighted to be able to come here again".
