A new road in a Mosgiel subdivision is named after a family synonymous with the Taieri racing industry.

Hec Anderton (74) said the Dunedin City Council seeking approval for a new road off Silver Springs Bvld, near Wingatui Rd, to be named Anderton Cres was a ''lovely gesture''.

''A wonderful achievement for our forebears. It's a lovely thought for my mum and dad and all the family.''

Council information support officer Bruce Hall sought support from the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board last week Mr Hall told the board Anderton Cres was an ''excellent choice''.

In council report said: ''The Anderton family were synonymous with the racing industry on the Taieri and well known nationally for their contribution to the racing industry. The family was first associated with Taieri racing and this site through H. A. Anderton and the generations of Andertons since continue the family's input into horse racing locally.

''The Silver Springs site was the old Mosgiel Park race track, Mosgiel's first racetrack prior to moving to Wingatui. The name, therefore, has strong significance to the site and the community.''

The property developer, Silversprings Ltd, said Anderton Cres was its first naming preference.

Hec said he and his brother Brian Anderton (78) were apprentice jockeys to their father and the past landowner of the subdivision allowed the family to work horses there.

''We used to go down and ride gallops around there when it was just a training track.''

Brian ''BJ'' Anderton, owner of White Robe Lodge in North Taieri, the biggest stud farm in the South Island, said he was ''honoured'' by the naming and it was ''fitting'' to be on the old racecourse.

Board chairman Bill Feather moved the board support the name Anderton Cres for consideration by the infrastructure services committee.

Every board member at the meeting was in favour of the name.
