An 8-year-old girl suffered extensive arm injuries following a dog attack in a Dunedin cul-de-sac last night.

The girl was playing in Manchester St, Bradford, with other children, when a rottweiler dog from a neighbouring house "latched on to her arm" shortly before 5.30pm, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said.

"It then had a go at her other arm, and she sustained substantial lacerations to both arms," he said.

The girl was taken to Dunedin Hospital by a family member, he said.

She was in a stable condition.

The dog was locked inside a house until it was removed by a Dunedin City Council animal control officer at 6pm.

Police did not know why the dog attacked. Inquiries were continuing, he said.
