Runaway truck under police investigation

The police commercial vehicle safety unit is now investigating a runaway truck which narrowly missed pedestrians and crashed in central Dunedin.

The truck was parked in the Octagon about 4.45pm on Tuesday while the driver was standing nearby making a phone call.

The vehicle rolled backwards, from the Octagon, down to the corner of George St and Moray Pl, and ploughed into two cars.

The driver gave chase down the street but was unable to catch it.

A witness said the truck rolled backwards across the footpath and narrowly missed them and others. No-one was injured.

A police spokeswoman said charges had not yet been laid in relation to the incident.

The truck was inspected by the commercial vehicle safety team yesterday, and follow-up inquiries were ongoing, she said.
