An unacceptably high number of children are not being restrained correctly in car seats, a campaign which started this week in Dunedin, has found.

The campaign targeting motorists' use of child restraints and run by the Dunedin SafeKids Coalition, which includes police, Plunket, ACC and the Dunedin City Council, was the first in Dunedin for about six years.

Plunket Otago and Southland area manager Barb Long said 32 seats were checked during an hour in the car park of The Warehouse and Pak'n Save in South Dunedin on Tuesday and 55% were non-compliant.

Common issues were loose harnesses, tether belts not being used, or the wrong size seat for the child.

One infringement notice was given to a motorist whose child was completely unrestrained in the car and three compliance notices were issued.

The compliance notices give motorists two weeks to fix the car seat or face an infringement notice.

Car seats were again checked in the car park yesterday afternoon with 40% of the 21 seats checked not complying.

Two people were issued with compliance notices.

Nikki Sinclair had daughter Hannah (2) properly restrained in the back seat of her car.

Mrs Sinclair said she knew the importance of having children in a car seat especially in case of a crash.

Plunket national child safety adviser Sue Campbell said a correctly fitted seat could be the difference between life and death for a child in an accident.

Children are legally required to be accommodated in car seats until they are 5, but often smaller children will need a car seat up to the age of 10.

Ms Long said people who wanted to check their car seats could visit the Plunket Car Seat Rental Service, opposite Pak'n Save in Hillside Rd.

The service was open from 9am-3pm on weekdays and on Saturday mornings.

The campaign continues until next Sunday.
