Safety issues outside John McGlashan College, in Dunedin, have prompted a proposal for trial roading improvements.

The Dunedin City Council is calling for feedback on a plan it says has resulted from concerns from the school about the safety of the area.

Outside the school there had been "lots of close calls", which were behind the proposed change, council transportation safety team leader Hjarne Poulsen said.

The improvements include stopping vehicles from turning from Pilkington St on to Balmacewen Rd, and changing the Pilkington St-Passmore Cres intersection so the give-way was on Pilkington St.

Most of the parallel parks on Pilkington St would be converted to angle parks.

Mr Poulsen said having less through traffic outside the college would improve safety for pupils and allow  more parking spaces. Drivers would be able to use Grater St or Passmore Cres to access Balmacewen Rd or Highgate respectively.

The council planned to mark new kerb extensions and parking changes during the October school holidays, and run the trial in term four, from mid-October to December.

If the trial was successful, kerb extensions would be installed over the  summer holidays.

Gee, are DCC finally learning? Put some paint down before putting down concrete. But someone still needs to monitor the performance of drivers observing the usability of the new marking.

What a great idea considering I had to slam on my brakes on Balmac road as a car came out of Grater Street very nearly T boning me yesterday. The woman had no clear view of the traffic and must have just thought she could risk it. It is chaos at 3.20pm. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to leave school...
