‘Not an unusual tactic’

A police officer conducting breath testing in Dunedin’s Lower Stuart St yesterday was trying to catch people avoiding a checkpoint.

Witnesses told the Otago Daily Times they thought it was unusual to see an officer conducting breath tests alone and in what they felt was a "dangerous" spot so close to an intersection with State Highway 1.

A police spokeswoman said a full checkpoint was set up near Toitū Otago Settlers Museum and officers noticed some vehicles taking an alternative route, which police felt might be an attempt to avoid the checkpoint ahead of them.

"An officer was stationed near the courthouse to ensure those vehicles were also tested," the spokeswoman said. "This is not an unusual tactic to deploy during such an operation." — Allied Media
