The first weekend of the Otago Model Engineering Society's Festival display had seen more people through the doors than last year, convener Michael Forrest said.
''We were amazed. We were well up on the same day last year for both the sales at the shop and takings at the gate,'' Mr Forrest said of Saturday's turnout.
About 1500 people had come to look at the model trains, boats, helicopters and planes during the weekend.
One who could not contain his excitement was 5-year-old Anton West.
When asked if he was a fan of trains and boats, Anton replied: ''Yes ... well actually, just trains and cars''.
Anton said he enjoyed the display.
His mother, Clare Munro-West, said with the sound of the society's ride-on train audible from their home, Anton insisted on visiting the display.
Mr Forrest said the club, which had more than 100 members, enjoyed opening its doors to share the skills and creativity of its members with the public.
''We had a few beers and a meal last night and everyone felt like the party that wins the election,'' he said, of the public interest.
