What do you get when you have the Mad Hatter and Miss Piggy in the same room as a banana?

A possible fight to the death, but more likely, the Otago Girls' High School 80th annual Library Day.

Hundreds of pupils and staff dressed as their favourite book or movie characters yesterday, to raise funds for new books.

Library Day, a tradition at the school, was started in 1938 as a means of building up the school's library.

The principal at the time suggested each class should contribute one book to it, making the library richer by 20 books each year.

Yesterday, each pupil and staff member gave a gold coin to raise funds for new books at the school's library.

Library manager/archivist Jane Smallfield said the school's Parent Teachers' Student Association also raised $1500 to buy new books, and various school groups, the board of trustees, the school council and two ex-girl branches pitched in and donated books.

''So they're coming from all sorts of sources.

''We've got over 300 new books which will keep the library going.''

She said it was great to see so many pupils and staff get involved in the atmosphere of the day, despite the weather being so miserable.

''It's great, especially those that go full-out to get into it and really embrace the library and the scene and the purpose of the day.

''It really brightened the day.''
