When inspiration strikes, Jake Cropley says three days is all you need to write an inspiring anthem to spur New Zealand's Commonwealth Games athletes to victory.

Given the Games are in Glasgow, next year, the King's High School 17-year-old drew inspiration from traditional Scottish songs to write his anthem On Forever Ye Go.

''I wrote it in three days, from concept to demo recording.

''Inspiration just consumed me. It came to me in waves. It was easy. It just flowed.''

Like the Scottish songs that inspired him, he hoped his song would capture the passion of New Zealanders and unite the country.

''The lyrics go back to the idea of never giving up, staying true to yourself and being a good sport.

''It has an anthemic Celtic feel.''

An unexpected bonus was his song was named winner of the Queen's Baton Songwriting Competition for Otago secondary school pupils, and was given its first public performance in the Octagon on Saturday, as part of the Queen's Baton Relay ceremony and St Andrew's Day celebrations.

Jake said he was ecstatic about winning the competition.

''It's overwhelming, really.''

The song was recorded professionally at Albany St Studios last week and is available on iTunes.
