Second toilet to be considered

The Dunedin City Council is considering adding another public toilet at Waikouaiti, a report to today's Waikouaiti Coast Community Board says.

City property assistant manager Rhonda Abercrombie said staff were investigating upgrading the existing Exeloo facility to a double unit. Staff were looking at funding options for the work, her report said.

To deal with complaints of the toilet malfunctioning, a computer program had been installed so the doors opened rather than closed in the event of a fault.

"The recent work will ensure that no-one can get trapped in the facility should the door malfunction. It is interesting to note that in the majority of cases, it was vandalism to the facility that was causing the malfunction."

The council reviewed Dunedin's public toilets in 2008 and had not identified Waikouaiti as requiring additional facilities, the report said.

Waikouaiti resident Jill Coughlan, who brought the matter to the community board during its September public forum, said yesterday it was "absolutely ridiculous" the township had a single public toilet.

Mrs Coughlan volunteered at the information centre during the Rugby World Cup.

She told the community board in September the toilets had malfunctioned during the tournament, and had caused problems previously.
