Several weather-related crashes

Snow on Dunedin's Three Mile Hill and Mt Cargill on Saturday caused angst for numerous motorists.

Several crashes, but only minor injuries, were reported.

By Saturday morning, thick snow had accumulated on Three Mile Hill Rd and Mt Cargill Rd was closed shortly before noon and was still closed at 6.30pm on Saturday.

While Danseys Pass Rd was still expected to be closed this morning, all major roads had reopened, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Two people earlier received minor injuries in a two-car crash on Mt Cargill Rd about 9am on Saturday, and one car had reportedly gone down a bank in icy conditions.

At 9.06am a couple were reportedly stuck for some time in their Mercedes car, at the side of the road, because of the conditions.

In one steep, hilly area, believed to be Mt Cargill Rd, a car, travelling at low speed, apparently slid on ice into one of several vehicles that were temporarily stranded nearby, late in the morning.

One onlooker said a grit truck was ''doing a wobbly dance'' in the slippery conditions as it arrived, but succeeded in laying down grit.

Police used a four-wheel-drive vehicle for better access in the conditions.

It was understood, but not confirmed, that there may have initially been some delays bringing some other police patrol vehicles away from steep icy areas, partly because of other stranded cars, and the need for caution in the conditions.

A police spokeswoman said police were aware of at least three minor collisions on Mt Cargill Rd on Saturday in the ''first major blast of winter''.

It was ''fortunate'' there were ''no more serious collisions'', which could have happened on a busier stretch of road, she said on Saturday evening.

No-one was hurt in a minor car crash in Anzac Ave, in the inner city, at 9.16am on Saturday, nor in a nose-to-tail crash on the Northern Motorway, near Pine Hill, at 10.37am, a police spokeswoman said.
