A competition at the Dunedin Skateboard Park in Thomas Burns St will involve more than just kick-flips and ollies; it will serve as a fund-raiser for a new park and there will also be a remembrance service for three young skateboarders who died this year.

The Skate to Relate competition next Saturday, May 31, from noon, would form part of Youth Week, spokesman Seth Gorrie (20) said.

"We would like people to come down, see what we are all about and relate to us as a community."

Before skating begins, a service would be held for three members of the skating community who died this year, he said.

"It has been a big blow for a lot of us and we would like to pay our respects in our own way for our friends," he said.

After the service, skateboarders would demonstrate their skills at the park, which the Dunedin City Council has been earmarked for a possible shift.

Although the proposed road realignment was some years away, the Dunedin City Council, along with the skateboarding community, were working together to come up with a design and site for a new skate park, he said.

"Rather than seeing them [the council] as the enemy, Skate to Relate marks the first time the skateboarders have reached out to the council."

The event would also mark the first time Dunedin's competing skateboarding shops had worked together to promote the sport, Mr Gorrie said.

The DCC was supporting the event to the tune of $1000 as it was keen to build a positive relationship with the skateboarding community, community adviser Michael Laufiso said.

"We are supporting them to make sure this event happens."

Mr Gorrie said it was hoped to attract people from the Otago Farmers Market, and the competition would also feature a sausage sizzle and a DJ and MC.

"People will certainly be able to hear us," Mr Gorrie said.

The event is free to spectators. Participating skateboarders will be charged a gold coin, with proceeds going towards a new park.
