Work to restore Dunedin’s 140-year-old former Dominican Priory is set to ramp up when the first portion of 30,000 roofing slates arrives from Wales next week.

Catholic Property Services property manager Bill Haydon said the first container of slates had arrived in New Zealand and was on its way to Dunedin.

All going well, work to repair the building’s roof could begin as soon as Tuesday, when a crane was scheduled to arrive at the site, he said.

The roof work was expected to take about six months and cost $900,000, but would ensure the category one-listed heritage building was protected from the elements — a key step in its future redevelopment.
