The Otago Regional Council is investigating a diesel spill in Otago Harbour at the weekend.
The spill in the harbour between Careys Bay and Burkes was reported to the council's pollution phone line yesterday morning.
Environmental monitoring and operations manager Jeff Donaldson said staff investigated but were not able to pinpoint the source of the spill.
It could have been due to rain on Saturday night washing diesel into the harbour through the stormwater drain or from a vehicle.
No action was needed to disperse the diesel as there was enough movement in the harbour itself to allow the diesel to evaporate quickly, he said.
The council was continuing its investigation.
