An arsonist left a trail of destruction around Dunedin early yesterday.

Firefighters were called to Luke St, Ocean Grove, after a van was set alight at 2.14am, a Fire Service spokesman said.

An offender was spotted leaving the area, he said.

The van was destroyed.

Just over two hours later, in the same suburb, a clothing bin was set alight on Tomahawk Rd.

Then, at 5.25am, also on Luke St, a letterbox was set alight, with the blaze spreading to a nearby tree and fence.

Police were called to the scene, he said.

A vehicle was also found burnt out on Stedman Rd, Mosgiel, about 5.43am.

''Obviously, we are investigating this and we would be keen to talk to anyone who saw anything suspicious in either area,'' Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.

Inquiries are continuing.
